The 70th Annual Tony Awards were held on June 12, 2016, to recognize achievement in Broadway productions during the 2015–16 season. The ceremony returned to the Beacon Theatre in New York City after three years at Radio City Music Hall and was broadcast live by CBS. James Corden served as host.
Hamilton received a record-setting 16 nominations, winning 11 total. The revival of The Color Purple won two awards. The Humans won four Tony Awards, and the revival productions of plays Long Day's Journey into Night and A View from the Bridge each took home two awards.
James Kimberley Corden, OBE (born 22 August 1978) is an English actor, writer, producer, comedian, singer and television host. He currently hosts the late-night television talk show The Late Late Show with James Corden on CBS, succeeding Craig Ferguson, whose decade-long tenure on The Late Late Show ended in December 2014. Corden has also presented the Sky 1 comedy panel show A League of Their Own since 2010.
Corden co-created, co-wrote and starred in the BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey (2007–2010), for which he won the BAFTA Television Award for Best Comedy Performance. He was featured on the No.1 single "Shout", along with British grime artist Dizzee Rascal, an unofficial anthem of the England football team for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
In 2011, he played the lead part in the comedy play One Man, Two Guvnors, which transferred from the National Theatre to the West End and then to Broadway, and was also cinecast worldwide via National Theatre Live. For his performance in the Broadway run of the play, Corden won the 2012 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play.
The musical made its Off-Broadway debut at The Public Theater in February 2015, where its engagement was sold out. The show transferred to Broadway in August 2015 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. On Broadway, it has received enthusiastic critical acclaim and unprecedented advance box office sales, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The Off-Broadway production of Hamilton won the 2015 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical as well as seven other Drama Desk Awards out of 14 total nominations.
