Best of Latin Music 2016

Latin music (Música latina in Spanish and Portuguese) is a musical category that encompasses music from the Spanish-speaking areas of the world (namely Latin America and Spain).[1][2][3] Most definitions of Latin music also include Portuguese-language music from Brazil and sometimes Portugal as well.[4][5][6] US trade industry groups[7][8] such as Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and Billboard magazine define "Latin music" as any type of release with most of its lyrics in Spanish, regardless of genre or the artist's nationality.[9][10][11]

The term "Latin music" originated from the United States (US) due to the growing influence of Hispanic and Latino Americans in the American music market, with notable pioneers including Xavier Cugat (1940s), Tito Puente (1950s), Antônio Carlos Jobim and Carlos Santana (1960s), and accelerating especially since the 1980s.[2][3] As one author explained the rising popularity from the 1940s: "Latin America, the one part of the world not engulfed in World War II, became a favorite topic for songs and films for Americans who wanted momentarily to forget about the conflagration."[12]

Major record labels such as Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music often have two divisions dedicated to the Latin market: one which focuses on Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula,[13] and the other for the Hispanic market in the United States.[14] Spain, Brazil, Mexico, and the United States are the largest Latin music markets in the world.[15]

Enrique Miguel Iglesias Preysler (/ɛnˈrk ɪˈɡlɛsiəs/; Spanish pronunciation: [enˈrike miˈɣel iˈɣlesjas pɾeizˈleɾ]; born 8 May 1975), known professionally as Enrique Iglesias, is a Spanish singer, songwriter, actor and record producer. He is widely regarded as the King of Latin Pop.[3][4] Iglesias started his career in the mid-1990s on an American Spanish-language record label Fonovisa Records under the name Enrique Martinez, before switching to the stage name Enrique Iglesias[5] and becoming one of the biggest stars in Latin America and the Hispanic market in the United States. By the turn of the millennium, he had made a successful crossover into the mainstream market and signed a multi-album deal with Universal Music Group for US $68 million with Universal Music Latino to release his Spanish albums and Interscope Records to release English albums. In 2010, he parted with Interscope Records and signed with another Universal Music Group label Republic Records to release bilingual albums. In 2015, Iglesias parted ways with Universal Music Group after a decade. He signed with Sony Music; his upcoming albums will be by Sony Music Latin in Spanish and RCA Records in English.[6]

Iglesias has sold over 159 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling Spanish artists ever.[7] Iglesias has scored over 150 number-one hits across all of the Billboard charts. He has had five Billboard Hot 100 top five singles, including two number-ones, and holds the record for producing 27 number-one Spanish-language singles on the Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks. He also holds the record for most number-one hits and the longest-running number-one hit on that chart.[8] Iglesias also has 14 number-ones on Billboard's Dance charts, more than any other male artist.[9]

"Big Splash" Artist

Ariadna Thalía Sodi-Miranda Mottola (Spanish pronunciation: [aɾiˈaðna taˈli.a ˈsoði miˈɾanda]; born 26 August 1971), known mononymously as Thalía, is a Mexican singer, songwriter, actress, author, entrepreneur, fashion designer and radio presenter.[2]

She has sung in various languages apart from her native Spanish, including English, Filipino, French, and Portuguese.[3] She is recognized as the most successful and influential female Mexican singer worldwide.[4][5][6][7] She is often referred to as the "Queen of Latin Pop" by international media, mainly because of her legacy within the Latin pop music scene for the last three decades.[8][9] As a solo artist, she has sold over 40 million records worldwide.[10][11][12][13] She has had dozens of top 10 singles, 16 of which went to number one and she has received numerous accolades, including five Billboard Latin Music Awards (from 17 nominations), several Premios Juventud and Lo Nuestro Awards, as well as seven Latin Grammy Award nominations.[14]

As an actress, Thalía has starred in a variety of successful telenovelas that aired in over 180 countries[15] and she is publicly referred to as the "Queen of telenovelas".[16] The media company Televisa has named her the best-paid telenovela actress in history.[17][18] and Billboard said her the most widely recognized Spanish-speaking soap star in the world.[19]

In 2011, Terra Networks included her in its list of "powerful and iconic women in Latin music".[20] She is also an occasional fashion designer, has her own nationally syndicated radio show and is the author of four books, including her memoir. On 5 December 2013, she was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as a recognition for her music career.[21][22]
